City Hall was busy ahead of Father's Day. Let's break it down.

Minutes before Wednesday turned into Thursday, these things happened at City Hall: Airbnbs were banned from single-family neighborhoods, the City Council accepted $90 million from Dallas Area Rapid Transit to fund various infrastructure improvements, the city got a new 282-acre park, a health clinic in South Dallas received public funding to get started on construction, and a contract was approved to overhaul the zoning code that governs what can be developed in Dallas.

Sheesh.

It was the last Dallas City Council meeting before its summer recess and this week’s inauguration of the new members after the May election. It was also a good reminder of why local government is so important. These are material changes to the city!

It’s Father’s Day, so I won’t keep you too long. The things I mentioned above are each worthy of their own space, and so you’ll find links to our coverage below.

Give the stories a read. Local government is important, and so is local news. Have a great weekend.

(And RIP Texas legend Big Pokey.)

DART and Dallas don't always get along. Even when our public transit agency is trying to give us money. The $90 million the city accepted this week could have been $111 million or it could have been $28 million. In the end, the city agreed to the $90M, and it will eventually pay for a lot of great infrastructure improvements.

The 282 acre park the city accepted this week is Big Cedar Wilderness, a hilly, beautiful stretch of land that could easily be in Arkansas. Here's how I described it: "Interstate 20 lies only a mile or so north, but, elevation aside, Big Cedar feels almost like the Ouachita Mountains in Western Arkansas. We’re surrounded by spindly juniper and lush pecan, oak, and cedar trees, shepherded along a narrow dirt path most often used by mountain bikers. (“Behind!”)"

This is the third year since President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth the 12th federally recognized holiday. Fort Worth's Opal Lee spent years hiking to D.C. to call for the recognition, and there are events all weekend to celebrate and honor the meaning of the day. Find them at the link below.

“Make yourself a committee of one to change somebody’s mind. If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love.”
